  • As I approached the area this endangered Black Rhinoceros was laying down sleeping in the lush grass and I didn’t notice it at first. After observing it for a while, it gently stirred and eventually stood to its feet bathed in the soft golden glow of early morning in Laikipia, Kenya.

  • Rhinoceros beetles are herbivorous insects named for the horn-like projections on and around the heads of males. Most are black, gray, or greenish in color, and some are covered in soft hairs. Another name given to some of these insects is Hercules beetle, because they possess strength of a herculean proportion. Adults of some species can lift objects 850 times their weight! That would be equivalent to a human lifting 9 fully grown male elephants! One of the uses for extreme strength is for the beetles to dig themselves into leaf litter and soil to escape danger. Their horns also help them to do this.

  • With less than six thousand Black Rhino left on earth, seeing them in the wild is one of the great privileges I get as a wildlife photographer and filmmaker in Africa. A subadult stood behind its mother for just a moment as the moon rose behind them. A truly magical scene and one I had to really push my camera to get in such dark conditions. I bundled up a jacket and leaned it on the edge of the vehicle I was in. I tried to balance it as steadily as I could to get a slow enough exposure to capture this once in a lifetime scene.

  • Everything came together at that moment and to me it represents what it means to be a wildlife photographer, getting out and being in the right place at the right time and having the knowledge and experience to capture that moment. The cattle egrets were following this southern white rhino as it grazed, looking for bugs to eat that are disturbed by the rhino walking. At this moment several flew in toward the back of the rhino and I love how it looks like it could be one egret in different stages of flight, but it’s actually three separate birds approaching. A beautiful moment topped off with a gorgeous moody sky as well.
