• African Wild Dog is a highly successful hunter, with the majority of its chases ending in kills. It preys mainly on medium-sized ungulates, though it will take other prey such as ostriches. The African Wild Dog is found in various open habitats across sub-Saharan Africa, though its range has been greatly reduced. It requires large territories for its survival, a factor which creates challenges for its conservation.

 • The hippopotamus is semiaquatic mammal, inhabiting rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps, where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of five to 30 females and young. During the day, they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grasses. While hippopotamuses rest near each other in the water, grazing is a solitary activity and hippos are not territorial on land.
• With less than six thousand Black Rhino left on earth, seeing them in the wild is one of the great privileges I get as a wildlife photographer and filmmaker in Africa. A subadult stood behind its mother for just a moment as the moon rose behind them. A truly magical scene and one I had to really push my camera to get in such dark conditions. I bundled up a jacket and leaned it on the edge of the vehicle I was in. I tried to balance it as steadily as I could to get a slow enough exposure to capture this once in a lifetime scene.

 • It was such a magical moment seeing so many Southern White Rhinos together in the wild. The sky was moody as it approached sunset and made the perfect setting for a silhouette. I also filmed this scene as each rhino moved about, eventually all exiting the frame.

 • Like a miniature dragon, with its prominent and prehistoric looking scales, this unique lizard is only found in a small region of South Africa.

The Sungazer (Smaug giganteus) is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ and threatened by habitat destruction, illegal poaching, and the muthi trade. They are habitat specialists with populations that are restricted to the Highveld grasslands of South Africa. Their habitat is also popular for farming, mines and power plants.

Within the last 40 years, around 1/3 of the Sungazer population has become extinct, indicating the need for urgent conservation intervention. However, conservation planning and implementation can only be effective with detailed knowledge of the species.
