These geckos are remarkably well camouflaged. Inactive during the day, Uroplatus geckos only move when disturbed. They respond to prodding with an impressive display of a brightly colored gaping mouth and an erect tail. At night they hunt insects.

  • The Flap-necked chameleon (Chamaeleo dilepis), is native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is a large chameleon, reaching 35 cm (14 in). Colouring ranges through various shades of green, yellow, and brown. There is usually a pale stripe on the lower flanks and one to three pale patches higher on the flanks. These chameleons lay 25 to 50 eggs in a hole dug in soil, which is covered over again by the female.

The unusual appearance of this albino snake is caused by genetic faults in the metabolic system that produces melanin.   • A slow-moving nocturnal snake that hunts for lizards, especially geckos, nestling birds, bats and small rodents. It is an excellent climber and spends its days hiding under the bark of trees or under rocks.<br />

The venom of the Tiger snake is mild and has virtually no effect on humans.

  • Like a miniature dragon, with its prominent and prehistoric looking scales, this unique lizard is only found in a small region of South Africa.<br />
<br />
The Sungazer (Smaug giganteus) is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ and threatened by habitat destruction, illegal poaching, and the muthi trade. They are habitat specialists with populations that are restricted to the Highveld grasslands of South Africa. Their habitat is also popular for farming, mines and power plants.<br />
<br />
Within the last 40 years, around 1/3 of the Sungazer population has become extinct, indicating the need for urgent conservation intervention. However, conservation planning and implementation can only be effective with detailed knowledge of the species.
