• There are few moments that have truly overwhelmed me and I take pride in being able to keep my emotions in check while working, but as soon as the light disappeared and it was time to let this Temminck’s Pangolin go on with its evening, I started to cry. I was so overcome with gratitude and wonder at the opportunity to see such a beautifully unique animal, one I never thought I’d have the chance to see, given its status as the most trafficked mammal on the black market, meaning all 8 species of Pangolin throughout Africa and Asia are in danger of extinction. To witness one of these gentle, docile creatures as it searches for ants and termites to eat, left me in complete awe as well as disbelief that people could be so cruel to these helpless animals.

 • As I approached the area this endangered Black Rhinoceros was laying down sleeping in the lush grass and I didn’t notice it at first. After observing it for a while, it gently stirred and eventually stood to its feet bathed in the soft golden glow of early morning in Laikipia, Kenya.

 • As a passionate reptile lover, witnessing this scene was a huge treat for me! As the largest chameleon in Madagascar, the aptly named Giant Malagasy Chameleon cautiously crossed a dirt road in a famous part of Madagascar known as Avenue of the Baobabs. I laid down on the road to get down to its level and it watched me intently.

I used a wide-angle lens to include as much of the environment as possible, given the grand location. As Madagascar's largest chameleon species, growing up to 27 inches (including its tail), this lizard is impressive, but of course is dwarfed by the formidable trees, known locally as ‘renala’ which is Malagasy for ‘mother of the forest’. Some reach almost 100 feet tall.

After getting a few shots that tried to capture the wonder and scale of the environment I scooped up the chameleon and put it on the other side of the road as carts filled with produce and 4-wheel drives filled with tourists zoomed by.

 • I lay on the cold metal deck of the icebreaker that had been my home for the previous week. I pointed my lens out of a hawsehole and was greeted with this view, only feet from my face. • She pawed at my lens as I sat beside her, everything is a potential toy at this age. After her mothers death, she was rescued & taken into care. She was getting to the age where it would be too dangerous to be this close anymore. Leopard are notoriously unpredictable and dangerous, so this special moment was not lost on me.

 • I sat observing this scene with my camera at the ready. I’d already taken some photographs of the giraffe all grazing at different times but I wanted to capture something different. I wanted to capture the moment when all four giraffes had their heads down eating at the same time and creating a scene we don’t usually think of when picturing giraffes. In this part of the Kalahari there were many tall trees for the giraffe to utilise their long necks, so instead they had to bend down to reach their lunch.

 • The experience still leaves me with so many questions. After spending several hours with a troop of baboons I was able to gradually sit closer and closer without disturbing them. After a while I was within a couple of meters as little ones played and adults foraged. As I sat in the shade near this lone male he barely opened his eyes at me. He seemed so peaceful and yet at the same time defeated.
Was he a former high ranking member of the troop and now relegated to the outskirts? His scars seem to suggest this is the case but I'll never know. Instead I have this image to ponder what exactly he may have been pondering.
• There are a few moment on ones career that truly takes the breath away, this was one of them as a cheetah takes a brief moment to look back over her shoulder as she's touched lightly in the subtle golden light of days end with a stunning rainbow and building storm in the distance. Even after almost two decades working as a wildlife photographer, it's moments like this that make me pinch myself just to make sure it's real and not all a wonderful dream.

 • Historically, cheetahs have been hunted for their fur, but today some of the biggest threats to their survival are loss of habitat, and competition for resources. Cheetahs require large areas of land for survival, so increased human settlements and road construction in their habitat puts them at risk.

 • Everything came together at that moment and to me it represents what it means to be a wildlife photographer, getting out and being in the right place at the right time and having the knowledge and experience to capture that moment. The cattle egrets were following this southern white rhino as it grazed, looking for bugs to eat that are disturbed by the rhino walking. At this moment several flew in toward the back of the rhino and I love how it looks like it could be one egret in different stages of flight, but it’s actually three separate birds approaching. A beautiful moment topped off with a gorgeous moody sky as well.
